News and Welcome

Scissortail Traditional Dance Society organizes dance events open to everyone in three Oklahoma cities:  Norman, Tulsa, and Oklahoma City. At our participatory events, we encourage the practice and promote the knowledge of traditional, historical, and folk dances, music, and song, with particular emphasis on American and English traditions.

Our Vision:

We are a friendly and inclusive community of motivated, talented, and dedicated dancers, musicians, callers and organizers.  We promote participatory and intergenerational American, English, and related traditional dance at various locales in Oklahoma.

Our Mission:

At our Scissortail dances, workshops and special events, we attract, welcome, and teach dancers, callers, musicians, and volunteers in order to grow a sustainable and vital dance community.

Covid policy (approved by the board October 30, 2022)

Be Kind and Responsible

  • Assume positive intent, knowing everyone is here for the participatory music and dancing.
  • If you feel sick or unwell, don’t attend.
  • Stay advised of the current community level and participate accordingly.
  • Scissortail and CDSS recommend vaccination due to close-contact in our dance form
  • Speak to your healthcare professional if you have any concerns

Scissortail has decided on the following requirements for local weekly dances and events. As COVID variants continue to evolve, these community levels of risk are our best assessment of the rate of spread and risk taken on by dancers, volunteers, bands, and callers.

If Community Levels in Cleveland/Oklahoma/Tulsa County are in GREEN / LOW: In-person dancing is able to continue without restrictions, at the discretion of local dance committees, based on caller and band availability, venue requirements, and weekly dance attendance.

If Community Levels in Cleveland/Oklahoma/Tulsa County are in YELLOW / MEDIUM: In-person dancing can continue, and Scissortail strongly recommends wearing a mask while attending a dance. A negative COVID test may be required for all attendees.

If Community Levels in Cleveland/Oklahoma/Tulsa County  are in RED / HIGH: Masks will be required.  Vaccination or a negative test will be required for all attendees.  Watch social media and email for potential cancellations.

Donations to Scissortail help us to continue to support our venues, musicians, callers, as well as community members in need, and to sponsor member projects related to our mission. All donations to Scissortail are tax deductible.
