Rebekah Valencia has been calling English Country Dance and Contra in Oklahoma since September 2017 and has been dancing ECD, Contra, Irish Sets, and International Folk Dance, beginning with ECD in January 2016. She has called dance evenings in Kansas and a few individual dances at workshops and weekends across the U.S.
Rebekah started calling because the local Oklahoma City callers for ECD were scheduled to be away, and the community needed more callers to fill in. Since that time, she has continued to call for our Scissortail dances and has become a valued member of our Caller Team. Rebekah used her opportunity to call regular dances to make her a better dancer through set awareness, knowledge of choreography and music structure, and adaptation of teaching techniques for dancers on the dance floor. Her passion is to give others a feeling of success and confidence without them knowing she helped them.
Rebekah has tried her hand at choreography, and has one publicized English dance, “Dance With Me,” to the tune by that name written by her mother, Ruth. The music was written about the longing to be able to dance, since Ruth is disabled and has trouble dancing. The dance was written in the hopes that Ruth may someday be able to dance it, which she did in 2018 at an Advanced ECD in Berkeley, CA. Rebekah has also written a Contra dance and assisted in the writing of a few others.
Rebekah prefers calling English Country Dance – her first love – because of the unique variety in music and figures. She enjoys calling Contra because of the energy the dancers bring to the floor and the flexibility of what the band can bring.
