Code of Conduct

The following is an abbreviated version of our Code of Conduct. You can find the complete Code here.

We are here to have fun…. all of us!

Scissortail Traditional Dance Society dances are for all who wish to enjoy a sociable evening of music and dance. We are open to all regardless of age, race, gender, sexuality, beliefs, or lifestyle. We expect every dancer to respect and show consideration for the welfare of other dancers and the dance community as a whole.

  • Respect all other dancers at all times.
  • Accept or decline all invitations to dance politely.
  • Be warm and welcoming, especially to beginners.
  • If you and your partner are both newcomers, split up and seek out experienced dancers.
  • Get other dancers’ verbal consent for flourishes.
  • Never physically force another dancer to move in any way, including pushing or pulling.
  • Use visual cues, rather than words, to help other dancers.
  • Share weight for a solid connection, avoiding tight squeezing, bending others’ wrists, etc.
  • A lead is an invitation that is offered and can be accepted or declined.
  • Do not lift any dancer off the floor, and keep flourishes within your own dance space.
  • Remember that another dancer’s comfort zone may be different than yours.
  • Sexually suggestive or harassing behavior is not acceptable.
  • If you need to drop out of a dance, wait until you’re out at the top or bottom of the set.
  • Avoid clothing that requires people to touch bare skin.
  • Consider packing a change of clothes, especially if you tend to sweat a lot.
  • Many people are sensitive to scents. Make the dance space pleasant for other dancers.
  • Please wash your hands after dancing and before touching food.

Honor the caller and the band:

  • When the caller is doing a walk-through, be silent and attentive.
  • Couples should join the dance at the bottom of the set.
  • During a demonstration, move as necessary to allow all dancers to see clearly.
  • Please thank the caller, band, volunteers, and any others who make the dance a success.
  • Always ask other dancers if they want feedback before giving it.
  • If anyone hurts you or makes you feel unsafe, uncomfortable, endangered, or embarrassed, speak with them directly, or let a Board Member or dance organizer know immediately.
