There are regular contra dances in Oklahoma City, Norman, and Tulsa. We dance in Norman on the first Friday of the month, in Tulsa on the first Saturday of the month, and in Oklahoma City on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.
Contra dancing is American folk dance; it is related to square dancing and traditional European dance forms, and over the course of its history has incorporated elements of swing, jazz, and rock and roll. We usually dance to live music with roots in Irish and old-time American traditions, but there are as many styles of music as there are dancers!
There are of contra dance videos online; a quick YouTube search will give you a great idea of contra dancing’s energy and flavor.
